I first heard this song when I was 10 years old from my father's record collection. It was Janis' version from the LP "I Got Them Old Kosmic Blues Again Mama." It really moved me. Well, almost 20years later, I hear Paige Ellison's version blasting loud and clear on a radio show in Austin TX called Excavation Nation (91.7 FM, KOOP radio on Wednesday afternoons). I have to say, it is nice to hear the roots of soul. Paige really moves and grooves the song in a easy and sultry soulful way. She subtley tells you how she feels, rather than blasting it in your face the way Janis does. Thanks for the in depth review on your site. I am definitely keeping this on my links to check out. If you want to check out the radio show here in Austin, goto www.excavationnation.com, and Rick McNulty is the DJ.

Although it wasn't anything like soul, Chip Taylor also wrote "Angel of the Morning," which stands as one of my favorite pop songs!

I've only ever heard the Joplin version. And what a treat hearing it without all the screech going on - smooth and slinky and powerful. Luscious.
