Charlie Earland’s Erector Set – Cherie Amour

Erland at the Hammond

Listen – Charlie Earland’s Erector Set – Cherie Amour – MP3″

Greetings all.

I hope the end of the week finds you well, and ready to groove to a very solid Hammond 45 by one of the kings of the keyboard, Mr. Charles Earland.
Earland has long been a favorite here at the Funky16Corners organization, and this tune, the flipside of the mighty burner ‘Yes Suh!’, is one of his best.
By the time the short-lived (exactly one 45) Charlie Earland’s Erector Set recorded their cover of Stevie Wonder’s ’My Cherie Amour’ (truncated here to just ‘Cherie Amour’) in 1969, Earland had already been recording for almost a decade as both a leader and as a sideman in Lou Donaldson’s band. He had also worked as a composer/producer on local Philly sides for Jean Wells, the Butlers and Frankie Beverly.
Though Earland had recorded on Blue Note (with Donaldson) and would shortly start a long and satisfying run for the Prestige label (as both leader and sideman with cats like Boogaloo Joe Jones and Rusty Bryant), he was still recording locally. The only other Eldorado release I’ve ever seen is a 45 he produced for Frankie Beverly and Raw Soul.
I’ve always been a big fan of Earlands Hammond stylings, and ‘Cherie Amour’ is – at least in my opinion – one of his finest moments. He manages to kick the tempo up a step or two without rushing things, and infuses Wonder’s pretty melody with an extra does of soul. His reading of the song has a propulsive energy, but still manages to retain the sunny flavor of the original. It’s one of those records that I can listen to over and over again.
If you get the opportunity to grab a copy of this one do so. It ain’t cheap, but it isn’t terribly expensive either, and the thundering high quality of the A-side makes it worth whatever you have to pony up to get it.
I hope you dig it, and I’ll be back on Monday with something groovy. Make sure to stay tuned on Tuesday as I’ve done a guest mix for the fine folks at Hook and Sling that you simply MUST check out.
